Santa's Little Helpers - Room 1

There is no time more exciting than the lead up to Christmas, especially for the children in Room 1 who recently explored the theme 'Santa's Workshop' during Aistear. Check out Santa's little helpers in action below.

Creative Station

   

The children were very busy at the Creative Station producing lots of Christmas themed artwork. Firstly the boys and girls constructed a snowman using doilies. They designed their snowmen using a range of coloured fabrics and fibres. Check them out below. They are 'snow' good!

Secondly the boys and girls made Santa Claus faces using paper plates. The children carefully painted their art pieces. They created Santa's long beard using fluffy cotton wool. A ma 'ho ho ho' sive well done to the mini artists!

Lastly the children engaged in a Nativity Art Project. The boys and girls coloured a stained glass window using their crayons. Ms Martin is so proud of the children's superstar colouring.

    SESE Station

                                                     

The children examined the strand unit 'Magnetism and Electricity' during SESE lessons. The boys and girls discussed and made predictions about materials attracted to magnets. They investigated which classroom items were magnetic materials. The boys and girls also engaged in free play using magnets of different shapes and sizes to explore their effects on a variety of materials. Scroll down to view the scientists hard at work!

 

Fine Motor Station

                                                    

The pupils created wonderful Christmas pictures using pegboards. Ms Martin loved seeing the children work as a team to make collaborative thematic projects. A Christmas town, a Christmas tree and Santa Claus were among the beautiful designs. The boys and girls also made toys and games using playdough.

Role - play Area

The Role - play Area transformed into Santa's Workshop. Everybody worked as hard as elves to design and make toys using tools and equipment, to wrap the gifts using coloured paper and lastly to pack them safely into Santa's sack. Santa may recruit some of the elves from Room 1 for help next year!

Undoubtedly it has been a magical few weeks in Room 1. Ms Martin couldn't be happier with the children's fantastic team work, listening skills and high level of engagement. Ms Martin predicts all of Room 1 are on The Nice List.

Christmas Jumper Day in Room 1

Today, Friday 10th December, Scoil Mhuire participated in Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Focus Ireland. The children in Room 1 arrived at school wearing their cosiest Christmas jumpers. Everybody looked very festive!

Ms Martin and all of the staff wish to express their thanks to everyone who engaged with this special event. The season of giving is definitely here! 

Winter Wonderland in Room 1

The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the theme of ‘Winter’ during Aistear. The boys and girls discussed the signs of winter, observed the influence that seasonal change has on people, animals and plants and lastly learned lots about winter holidays to various 'cool' locations! 

Creative Station

   

The children displayed their artistic flair and creative skills at the Creative Station. A collaborative art project was completed whereby the children worked closely to design a beautiful Christmas tree as seen below. The boys and girls also engaged in print making to produce a magical winter scene. Check out the masterpieces below! Ms Martin is so proud of the 'brrr'illiant work.

SESE Station

                                                      

The children in 1st Class conducted an experiment called 'Melting Ice.' The boys and girls worked like scientists to determine how to melt ice quickly. The boys and girls in Senior Infants brainstormed a fascinating animal, the polar bear. The children watched a video and learned lots of new facts about this beautiful Arctic animal.

                                             

                                                       

Fine Motor Station

                                                       

The children made winter essentials such as scarves, woolly hats, ear muffs and lots more using play dough at the Fine Motor Station.

                   

                                                        

Role - play Area

After discussing winter holiday destinations and popular winter activities as a class group, it was time for the children to play the role of a travel agent or a customer in the Role - play area. The boys and girls were very busy researching holiday deals to places such as Lapland, Canada and France. Lots of customers received great bargains and jetted off on ski holidays to the French Alps. Some extra lucky customers even flew to Lapland to visit Santa Claus. The children in Room 1 were also sent a video from a real life travel agent named Joanne. Joanne explained to the children that she is very busy at the moment booking winter holidays for her customers. Joanne was very impressed to hear that the children in Room 1 enjoyed exploring this interesting topic. 

     

It has been an excellent fortnight in Room 1. The children displayed good listening skills, superstar colouring, neat handwriting and worked very hard. Ms Martin is very proud of the children.
