4th Class Update!

4th Class have had a very busy start to the first term.
Maths
In maths we have been learning all about place value, data, lines and angles and addition and subtraction. We used geoboards and elastic bands to make the angles that teacher called out. We also tried to design a house using oblique, horizontal and parallel lines using only 12 lollipop sticks.

Cycle Safety
4th Class were also involved in an 8 week cycle safety programme. Graham and Ruth from Cycle Right Training came every Wednesday and we learned how to cycle properly. The first important thing that we learned was to carry out three checks before we even got onto our bicycles - helmet check, clothes check, bike check. Each week Ruth and Graham showed us how to use our bicycles correctly. The yard became a roadway while we practiced our skills. By week 7 the instructors felt that we were ready to cycle o the road! We left the school and ventured down to the church and back. Ruth and Graham thought that Moynalty was the busiest place that they had ever been!

National Day of Fitness
Bryan from Club Active came to school to put us through our paces in a fitness class! It was tough going but we got through it. Later that day, we relaxed our bodies and flexed our bodies in a yoga session with Ms Clarke. What a great way to exercise!

Student Council Elections
At the end of September things got political! A lot of the members of our class went on the canvassing trail for the Student Council Elections! We had to write a piece about ourselves and to try and persuade our friends to vote for us. We then had to stand up and present our bio and then the vote took place. Congratulations to Stephen and Aleisha who were the successful members of our class and we wish them all the best for the year ahead.

Science
We completed a science experiment on water and filtration. We had to fill plastic bottles with soil and water. We had great fun working together to fill the bottles. We mixed the soil and water together and they ended up looking like an unappealing drink!! We predicted that the water was too muddy to clear and we could not believe how clear the water became over a few days.

PE.
This term in PE we focused on the Games strand of the PE curriculum and James from Moynalty GAA came to teach us ball handling and passing skills. We had a great time and enjoyed playing the co-operative games and learning to work as a team.

Maths Week
For maths week, instead of written homework we brought home a maths game every day. We also worked on our problem-solving skills and Ms Clarke presented us with a problem to solve at the beginning of maths time. We had great fun and the problems really got us to think and use our problem-solving techniques.
We also had a maths trail around the yard. Ms Clarke presented us with a lot of questions such as adding up all the years on the staff cars, multiplying the amount of Green Flags by 3, multiplying the vowels in the school sign by 7, finding angles, naming the shapes of the road signs and also working out the perimeter of the basketball court.

Friendship Week
For Friendship Week we read the story ‘Have You Filled A Bucket Today?’. This story explained how important it is to be a bucket filler rather than a bucket dipper. We also had a circle time session and learned about a friendship web and how we are all tangled up and that if someone drops the wool it breaks down the web.
Halloween Activities.

Before we knew it, it was Halloween midterm! For art we made symmetrical Halloween pictures. On the day of the holidays we had our annual dress up day. We had lots of scary creatures in our class and we even had a visit from Santa!

Just like that it's Mid-Term Break! Seomra 4 - A look back at what we got up to.

On August 29th, twenty nine enthusiastic students filled Seomra 4 for their first day in fifth and sixth class. Since then they have been very busy working through the curriculum and enjoying lots of extra curricular activities too.

Cumann na mBunscol
Our boys and girls teams both participated in the cumann na mBunscol Football competitions.
The girls team played Boyerstown, Carnaross, Kilbride and Oristown. Unfortunately the results didn't go our way, however there were some excellent team performances with each girl on the team improving her skills as the weeks passed. One of our players suffered a broken wrist during a game and we wish her a speedy recovery.
The boys team played Carlanstown, Drumconrath, Kilbride, Kilmanhamwood and Oristown. They showed great skill and determination to win four out of five of these matches. This means that they have qualified to a quarter final of the competition. They face Boyerstown after the midterm break.
We wish them every luck as they see out this competition!

Student Council Election
On September 23rd Elections were held to form our new student council for the 2019/2020 school year. Many wonderful candidates put their names forward and put together excellent election campaigns. Votes were cast and two students emerged successful from Seomra 4; huge congratulations to Lee Barry and Shannon McMahon on their election, best of luck to both Councillors. Well done to all students who participated in the election.

Club Active Visit
26th September was Nation Fitness Day. All classes were put through their paces by Club Active with a tough outdoor fitness session. The fifth and sixth class students did a lot of complaining; but they really enjoyed the session.

Secondary School Visits
As the children's time in primary school comes to an end they have an important decision to make in deciding which secondary school to attend. They are very lucky in Moynalty with a vast array of wonderful school in the locality. We have already been visited by Nobber SS, Eureka SS, St. Ciaran's SS and we expect a visit from Bailieborough SS on the first day back after Mid-term break. These visits are a great insight into what children can expect in secondary school and the range of subjects and extra curricular activities available to them.

Peace Proms 2020
We have been selected as one of the schools to participate in Peace Proms 2020. This is a very exciting opportunity for pupils from 2nd - 6th class. Our choir consists of 52 members and we will be attending workshops and rehearsals in the run up to our performance in the RDS on Saturday February 1st at 8pm.

We have lots to look forward to after mid-term break, check in again soon to find out what else we are getting up to!

National Enterprise Town Awards

The Student Council along with Ms Tinnelly were delighted to take part in the National Enterprise Town Awards today. We listened as lots of people spoke about the community spirit and enterprise of Moynalty. We heard about the resilience and hard work of the people of Moynalty who overcame very difficult weather conditions so that the people of Moynalty and some 35,000 visitors could enjoy the famous Moynalty Steam Threshing Fair this year. We were very proud to hear how impressed the judges were with the sense of local spirit and the beautiful surroundings of our village. The judges spoke to the children of Scoil Mhuire and we told them about many of the great initiatives of Scoil Mhuire; Green Flags, Healthy Eating, Active Schools along with the exciting news of our new build with the addition of the ASD Unit. Well done to Faye Gilsenan, Sarah Doggett, Séan Reynolds and Mikey Smyth who represented Scoil Mhuire and also to Lilly Kangly, Séan Mac Mahon, Joe Mc Mahon and Anna Gilsenan who represented the football club today!
