Room 1 go to the Supermarket!

Room 1 thoroughly enjoyed exploring 'The Supermarket' during Aistear. The girls and boys investigated the different areas in a supermarket, listed items one might see stocked on the shelves and of course, identified the many people who work in this busy environment.

Creative Station

At the Creative Station the children were busy creating artwork based around the theme of St Patrick's Day. Firstly the girls and boys engaged in print making using cotton buds and coloured paints to design a rainbow. A pot of golden coins was pasted at one end of each rainbow.
Secondly they painted lucky leprechauns as seen displayed in the classroom below.

SESE Station

The children adopted the role of scientists by examining the Food Pyramid, a visual resource used to inform people of the different food types and their daily requirements to ensure a healthy and balanced diet. Following this research, the girls and boys identified healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and salads. They also learned about the benefits of including a variety of foods to help keep their bodies healthy and strong.

Fine Motor Station

The children constructed food items using play dough. They further worked on their fine motor skills by engaging in some cut and paste activities. The girls and boys carefully cut out fruits to design a delicious fruit kebab and products to paste into a shopping basket. Ms Martin was very impressed with the high level of concentration at this station.

Role - play Area
A supermarket opened in the Role-play corner. The children adopted the roles of shopkeeper, shop counter worker, shop assistant and customer whilst playing in this area. Customers were very busy walking up and down the food aisles and of course, to different areas in the supermarket such as the bakery and butchers. They checked their shopping lists to ensure they put the correct products into their trollies or baskets. Staff in the supermarket worked hard to make sure shelves were full of food items. They were also busy at the checkout scanning purchases.

It has been a 'super' few weeks. Ms Martin and the children can't wait for a real life trip to a supermarket in the locality soon!
