Junior Infants Nativity Play

Junior Infants proudly performed the Nativity Play on Tuesday and Wednesday for parents and grandparents! They were fantastic at learning all their lines and all the songs for the performance!
They were super proud of themselves as was Ms Ormiston!!

Student Council Shoebox Appeal

The Student Council along with all of the pupils of Scoil Mhuire have been very busy for the last couple of weeks. The student council (Lilly, Mikey, Anna, Seán, Sarah and Faye) along with Ms Tinnelly decided that they wanted to do something that would help those who are less fortunate than us at Christmas time. We did some research and decided to take part in a 'Shoebox Appeal'. We wanted to help people in the surrounding areas. As a whole school, we gathered lots of amazing toys, stationary, clothes, hygiene products and some WOW gifts for our Shoeboxes. The Student Council then worked very hard to sort all of the items into appropriate boxes based on gender and age. We wrapped and sent our 37 beautiful heartfelt Shoeboxes off to lots of children in need!

Cross Country 2018

Cumann na mBunscol Cross Country

So the day started by getting on the bus at 9:00am sharp. The race was in Bellewstown Racecourse. 60 schools attended with 1300 racing.

The first race was the small schools U-11 Girls and they were Emma, Molly, Ellie-Mai, Shannon, Lilly and Anna.  Lilly came in 10^th out of more than 200 people! Anna came in 65^th! All of the girls did brilliant!

The second race for us was the U-11 Boys the participants were Seán Mac Mahon, Séan Cassidy, Cathal, Lee, Mikey, Jack, Shane Bennet and Ódhran. Ódhran came 26^th out of more than 200 people. Jack came in 29^th. Seán Mac came in 51^st.

We came third overall in U-11s!

The next race for us was U-13s. The participants were Fionn, Shane Cahill, Cian, Joe and Caoimhín. Caoimhín came in 104^th out more than 200 people. Great results for all!

Next were the U-13 girls and the participants were Charlotte, Amy, Jane, Cara.

Charlotte came 7^th, our highest finish on the day. On the bus we had the craic.

We had a great time and we are very proud of ourselves!

Junior Infants Christmas Shoebox Gifts

In Junior Infants, as part of Religion and SPHE, we decided to get involved in the Team Hope Shoebox Appeal.  We watched a video from last year showing all the children receiving their shoeboxes and wanted to share our love with them this year.  We each brought in something for the shoeboxes; toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, colouring books, markers, copies, pencils, flip flops, sunglasses, hats, toys, teddies, sweets and lots of other items too.  Teacher couldn’t believe how generous we all were, we filled 5 boxes full! Two boys in our class even filled their own shoebox each with their family which was very kind and generous of them.  Ms Ormiston dropped off our Christmas Shoebox gifts and Team Hope will deliver them right into the hands of some of the world’s most vulnerable children – many of whom will receive no other gift this Christmas. For some it’s the first gift they’ve ever received.

It’s hope, it’s God’s love, it’s joy and excitement – It’s the whole of Christmas wrapped up in a Shoebox!

Junior Infant Halloween Fancy Dress

5th and 6th Class September October

We have had a very busy half term back at school! Here are some pictures and information about some of the things we have been learning about so far this year.
 We are taking responsibility and ownership for a lot of our learning by carrying out experiments, using Ipads to research and working in pairs and as part of a team.

Science - Investigating Sound

We began learning about sound by researching some important facts using our Ipads. Then we carried out different experiments at 3 stations. We worked as a team and learned about how you can 'see' sound, how it vibrates, how to change the pitch of sound and we guessed sounds of different items in boxes.

History - The Maya People

Most children had not heard of the Maya people who lived in Central America from 2600BC. They were very intelligent people and they recorded the movements of the sun, the moon and planets on astronomical charts. They made accurate calendars and predicted the solar eclipse of 1999! Most Mayans could solve mathematical problems.They were excellent farmers and grew maize, beans and avocado! The Mayans developed a writing system similar to hieroglyphics. For leisure and entertainment, they played a game with a rubber ball.
The children worked in pairs or groups of 3 an used specific websites to research 2/3 topics each. Projects were presented to the class and it was an enjoyable learning experience for all.

In drama, children took turns using improvisation techniques to role-play a day in the life of a Mayan.

Geography and Science

We learned about how soil is formed and carried out an experiment to investigate the drainage of different soil types. 

Firstly, we took 'got our hands dirty' by investigating different soil samples; texture, insects found in it, dryness/moistness.  Then each group took turns carrying out our drainage experiment. It was a fair test as each group had the same amount of soil, water and time.

3rd & 4th Class  September News

We have had a busy start to our year in 3rd and 4th class. In September we learned a lot in science and geography about different habitats around the world. We worked together to create a group project on habitats such as hedges, shrub lands, woodlands, oceans,wetlands deserts. We used the
 i pads to research our habitat.

In history, we discovered how Setanta got the name Cúchuainn. We wrote a diary entry from Setanta's point of view.

3rd class come together to do maths. In September we learned all about place value. We also met the Angle family - Daddy Obtuse, Mammy Right (because Mammy is always right!) and Baby Acute angle. We used geoboards and elastic bands to make the angles. It was great fun!

 

In P.E. we have been focusing on movement skills and athletics.  We have been playing co-operation games to help us to work together as a team.

At the end of September, John from St Mary's Villa's in  Moynalty came to help us to plant our flower bed as a thank you for helping him with the 'Bug Hotel'. We planted snowdrops, viola, and other flowers. These will help to attract bee's to our garden.

John invited Ms Clarke along to attend the Kells Municipal 'Pride of Place' awards on the 9th of October in the Headfort Arms Hotel. We were delighted when Ms Clarke informed us that John won 1st prize in the 'Grow Your Own' category and how the judges mentioned the 'Bug Hotel' as part of their adjudications. John now goes forward to the county final In November. Best of luck John! We were so glad to be part of your project!


In art we used our imaginations to turn one black dot into great works of art. The drawings turned out amazing!
