Room 5 sum up!

 Dia dhaoibh a chairde!

Rang a sé have gotten off to a flying start this year with lots of projects and great work! Here are some photos of what we've been up to.

We started off the year with a project on all things Celtic! We read about Ireland in the time of saints and scholars, created some Book of Kells art and made Ogham dolmens spelling out our names!

We love STEM activities in room 5 and it's very important that we work in teams. Here we are trying to make the longest possible chain out of a single sheet of paper! We've also made pyramids using spaghetti and jelly babies.

We made scones at the end of September in our groups! We weighed out the ingredients, kneaded and shaped our dough. When they were baked, we ate them with butter, jam cream and of course, washed it all down with a cup of tea!

We've started our GAA training with Ian again this year! We're always happy to be out and playing and now we're developing our skills too.

Scientists Galore in Scoil Mhuire

Scoil Mhuire had lots of fun celebrating Science Week this year. The children enjoyed a week full of predicting, hypothesising and investigating several cool experiments. The theme for this year was 'Food' and there were lots of experiments associated with food explored this week. Check out what the scientists discovered below.

                                                                         Room 1

Science Week commenced with a POP in Room 1. The children discovered a chemical reaction occurs between Coca Cola and Mentos resulting in an eruption. Thumbs up for this discovery! The boys and girls had a blast designing and making rockets. The children worked like scientists to test how far they could make their rocket travel. All the rockets launched into the air and almost landed on the moon!

Food colouring was explored in lots of classrooms over Science Week - it's safe to say everyone loves the  'Rainbow Skittles Experiment'. Check out the wonderful photos from Room 1, 2 and 3 below.

Room 2

Room 2 also focused on the soap and pepper experiment and explored how washing our hands with soap is so important. We enjoyed a webinar on Friday morning which was delivered by Teagasc Ireland. The children learned lots about cows, grass and milk and had lots of their questions answered throughout.

There was great excitement in Rooms 2 and 3 each day to see how big our gummy bears grew. The children could not believe the difference in the sizes by just adding water!

Room 5

Rang a sé were experimenting with force and pressure for science week! The children raced their balloons and tested various methods of improving their pace.
The following day, the children tested force and pressure and spreading it out by testing how many of us could stand on tables that were supported by balloons! (But Ms. Ní Chiosain's battery died so our memories are all we have!)

Well done to all our scientists on another successful science week in Scoil Mhuire Moynalty.

Maths Week and Science week 2021 in Room 3

The children in room 3 have been busy during Maths week and Science week.  They took part in lots of fun activities and even took advantage of using our lovely outdoor classroom while the weather is still so mild.

For Science week this year we did lots of experiments. We grew a gummy bear in class, made a skittles rainbow and made elephant toothpaste! This took a few attempts.  We also watched science videos. Next week we will be focusing on teeth in Science and SPHE and will do an experiment in class involving lots of eggs.  We will post some pictures next month.

Room 1 had a Blast!

The children recently focused on the theme ‘Space’ during Aistear. The boys and girls identified the eight major planets of the solar system and their characteristics, learned about Neil Armstrong and the first moon landing and discovered lots of fascinating facts about this interesting topic.

Creative Station

The children created a picture of the solar system using pastels. Check out their masterpieces below. They are all 'out of this world!'

SESE Station

The boys and girls carried out an experiment called ‘Blast Off!’ The children worked like scientists to test how far they could make their rockets travel. Rockets were launched into the air and almost landed on the moon!

Fine Motor Station

The children developed their fine motor skills lacing planets, the sun and the moon. They also worked with pegboards to design rockets, planet Earth and stars. Some children even designed and made their very own space crafts. Check out the children in action below!

Role - play Area

The children had a blast conducting scientific experiments and tests, exploring moon rocks and researching the planets in the Space Station. In Room 1, there are definitely some astronauts in the making.

It has been a wonderful fortnight in Room 1. Ms Martin is so proud of all the hard work completed.
