Student Council Shoe Box Appeal

The Student Council and all of the children in Scoil Mhuire have worked very hard over the past month to put together shoe boxes full of goodies for our Shoe Box Appeal. The Student Council reminded the children to bring in the 4W's for people who have less than us at Christmas time. We were overwhelmed by all of the items to wash with, wear, write with and WOW items. When the student Council started to organise the shoe boxes and divide the items equally, we couldn't believe that we had gathered nearly 50 shoe boxes full!! A huge 'Thank You' to everyone who donated to our appeal. We are delighted to know that we are supporting those less fortunate this Christmas.

Merry Christmas to all of the Scoil Mhuire families!

Health Promoting School Flag

Ms Ormiston and the Health Promoting Team are delighted to announce that Scoil Mhuire have been awarded their Health Promoting flag.  Carmel Halpin, the Health Promoting Officer, made the presentation on the 18th of December 2019.  Every pupil in the school was presented with a Health Promoting towel and some parents from the PA made delicious fruit platters to celebrate the occasion - a big thank you to Patricia O’Reilly, Mary Flanagan and Jody Gilsenan!

Well done to the HPS team for all their hard work over the past two and half years for embedding and encouraging healthy habits over our 4 main areas; To Improve and work on our Positive Mental Health, To Improve our Nutrition and Eating Habits, To Promote Physical Activity and To Promote Hand Hygiene.  We will continue to work on these areas and make Scoil Mhuire a super healthy school!
Thanks to the whole school community; staff, pupils and parents for embracing the process and implementing it in their daily lives making it a huge success.  Let’s keep up the good work in the new year!
HPS Team: Mikey Smyth, Lilly Kangley, Finn McEllin, Lucy Gilsenan, Ewan Gilsenan, Tara Olwell, Maya Ormiston and James Carville.  And a huge thank you to Ciaran McEllin our parent rep who has been very helpful and supportive throughout the process!

Climate Action Week 2019

Climate Action Week
Climate Action Week was on from October 14th – 20th and each class in the school carried out activities each day to learn all about climate change and its effects. 4th Class researched, designed and illustrated a book about Climate Change on ‘Book Creator’ on the iPads. We also wrote acrostic poems. 5th and 6th Class worked in groups to create topic projects.
We made posters on the theme of Climate Change. The Green Schools Committee organised a Climate Action Day on Friday 18th . We dressed up in blue and green as a symbol of earth.

We had a ‘Zero Power Hour from 1 – 2 pm. Teachers were asked to turn off all power so that teaching and learning became ‘unplugged’. We will be carrying out more activities throughout the year as part of our Green Schools theme Biodiversity – Energy. The pupils of Scoil Mhuire have an urgent message to tell everyone. Watch the video below to hear their message. Let us be the change for the future. There is no Planet B.

Cups Against Cancer Coffee Morning

On Friday 11th October, 4th class opened their class room doors to the public and to the other classes and hosted a coffee morning for the Irish Cancer Society fundraiser ‘Cups Against Breast Cancer’ campaign. Lots of baked goods were donated, the class was set up to serve the huge array of buns, biscuits and cakes that were on offer. We are delighted to say that the grand total of €877.77 was raised! We would like to say a huge thank you to all that donated baked goods, to those that gave donations so kindly and to the ladies that helped to serve tea. We had a great day!

4th Class Update!

4th Class have had a very busy start to the first term.
Maths
In maths we have been learning all about place value, data, lines and angles and addition and subtraction. We used geoboards and elastic bands to make the angles that teacher called out. We also tried to design a house using oblique, horizontal and parallel lines using only 12 lollipop sticks.

Cycle Safety
4th Class were also involved in an 8 week cycle safety programme. Graham and Ruth from Cycle Right Training came every Wednesday and we learned how to cycle properly. The first important thing that we learned was to carry out three checks before we even got onto our bicycles - helmet check, clothes check, bike check. Each week Ruth and Graham showed us how to use our bicycles correctly. The yard became a roadway while we practiced our skills. By week 7 the instructors felt that we were ready to cycle o the road! We left the school and ventured down to the church and back. Ruth and Graham thought that Moynalty was the busiest place that they had ever been!

National Day of Fitness
Bryan from Club Active came to school to put us through our paces in a fitness class! It was tough going but we got through it. Later that day, we relaxed our bodies and flexed our bodies in a yoga session with Ms Clarke. What a great way to exercise!

Student Council Elections
At the end of September things got political! A lot of the members of our class went on the canvassing trail for the Student Council Elections! We had to write a piece about ourselves and to try and persuade our friends to vote for us. We then had to stand up and present our bio and then the vote took place. Congratulations to Stephen and Aleisha who were the successful members of our class and we wish them all the best for the year ahead.

Science
We completed a science experiment on water and filtration. We had to fill plastic bottles with soil and water. We had great fun working together to fill the bottles. We mixed the soil and water together and they ended up looking like an unappealing drink!! We predicted that the water was too muddy to clear and we could not believe how clear the water became over a few days.

PE.
This term in PE we focused on the Games strand of the PE curriculum and James from Moynalty GAA came to teach us ball handling and passing skills. We had a great time and enjoyed playing the co-operative games and learning to work as a team.

Maths Week
For maths week, instead of written homework we brought home a maths game every day. We also worked on our problem-solving skills and Ms Clarke presented us with a problem to solve at the beginning of maths time. We had great fun and the problems really got us to think and use our problem-solving techniques.
We also had a maths trail around the yard. Ms Clarke presented us with a lot of questions such as adding up all the years on the staff cars, multiplying the amount of Green Flags by 3, multiplying the vowels in the school sign by 7, finding angles, naming the shapes of the road signs and also working out the perimeter of the basketball court.

Friendship Week
For Friendship Week we read the story ‘Have You Filled A Bucket Today?’. This story explained how important it is to be a bucket filler rather than a bucket dipper. We also had a circle time session and learned about a friendship web and how we are all tangled up and that if someone drops the wool it breaks down the web.
Halloween Activities.

Before we knew it, it was Halloween midterm! For art we made symmetrical Halloween pictures. On the day of the holidays we had our annual dress up day. We had lots of scary creatures in our class and we even had a visit from Santa!
